Our Favourite Day of the Year

With Christmas holiday schedules being as crazy as they are, we make a point of taking one day in December and celebrating Christmas with just the three of us.

The day itself normally falls right in the middle of the month, making it a bit unconventional, but it truly is one of our favourite days of the year.

It is a FULL day affair and we have quite the itinerary which includes enough costume changes that even Diana Ross would be envious of

Upon waking up, we head downstairs to open stockings.  Mom doesn’t waste any time in grabbing a Christmas cocktail and Dad does not waste any time in setting up the tripod to take pictures.  Note - both activities are of equal importance to them.

After stockings are finished, I decide they look just as good on my feet as they do on the fireplace mantel.

Then we have breakfast.  First, I get to choose from Kellogg’s mini-cereal boxes that I now associate with either camping or Christmas.  As you can see, my cereal of choice this year was delicious Corn Pops.
Then we have Santa pancakes – giving all of us an excuse to eat copious amounts of whip cream (Santa needs a beard, n’est pas?!)
We then head to the living room tree where we have amassed a ridiculous amount of presents for ourselves.

We open a few presents and decide that we should probably get changed out of our pajamas.  Of course, Dad’s rules dictate that any costume change requires a minimum of two pictures in front of two different trees.
We then arrange for one of mom’s favourite meals – the picnic lunch that is made exclusively out of  classic holiday hors d'oeuvres…. shrimp, cashews, creamy cheeses…. Mmmmm.
More gifts are opened and, surprisingly, my favourite gifts so far collectively cost $3.  They include a bag of plastic army men and the mack daddy of all gifts for a six-year-old boy – the whoopee cushion!  See video below for this awesome present in use.

Late afternoon comes and mom needs a nap because she has drank about ¾ of a bottle of champagne by this point.  So we all take some quiet time…. Mom sleeps, dad works out and I start building one of my new lego sets.
We all shower and get ready for the evening festivities.  Which, once again, requires a costume change and the mandatory pictures in front of the trees.

The funny face family shot is a must as well!

Then we sit down to a grand ol’ Christmas feast and drink from our new moose mugs (made famous by Clark W. Griswold) that mom gave to dad for Christmas, but she secretly just wanted to buy them for herself.

We open the remaining presents which include a diamond belly button ring, a mini-ski trip and Luke Skywalker’s X-Wing Starfighter!!!  You can probably guess which present belonged to each of us
Mom and Dad then put me to bed and they spend the remainder of their night hanging out together at the basement bar, talking and laughing and sipping on some Dad’s new single malt scotch.

How could this not be one of the best days of the year??!!
